Before he died, Alex was described as having the intelligence of a 5-year-old human,
with the emotional range of a 2-year-old.
That high level of cognitive ability had only previously been seen in dolphins and great apes.
Alex also encouraged other birds in the study, praising them when they answered questions correctly.
