What States allow Same-Sex Marriage Now?

In case you live under a rock, we thought you might want to know that late last Friday night, June 24, 2011 the New York State Senate voted to legalize same-sex marriage.

The bill passed the State Assembly with no problems, and after much internal debate, four Republicans broke with their party and joined all but one Democrat in passing the bill, 33-29.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law the same evening, and it will go into effect in late July.

New York is now the sixth and most populous state to legalize same-sex marriage. The other five states include Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. Washington D.C. also allows gay marriage, but they aren’t technically a state.
